Ups… itulah potongan lirik dari lagu American Idiot yang dibawakan oleh band asal California itu.
Band Greenday berdiri sejak tahun 1987 di Berkeley, California, Amerika Serikat. Band ini didirikan oleh Trio Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, dan Tre Cool. Green Day sangat diakui karena keberhasilan mereka dalam membuat genre punk rock kembali terkenal, bersama-sama dengan Sublime, The Offspring, dan Rancid.
Di sekitaran medio tahun 1987, 2 orang bersahabat, Billie Joe Armstrong dan Mike Dirnt yang masih berusia 15 tahun membentuk band bernama Sweet Children. Dan di tahun 1988, Armstrong dan Dirnt mulai mengenal Sean Hugles dan John Kiffmeyer mantan drummer Isocracy dan sekaligus mereka direkrut sebagai bassist dan drummer. Dan ditahun 1998 juga Hughes memutuskan untuk meninggalkan Sweet Children. Larry Livermore seorang produser musik memutuskan untuk mengontrak mereka dan sekaligus merilis mini album perdana mereka 1,000 Hours. Atas saran dari Larry, nama mereka diubah menjadi Greenday karena pada saat itu juga ada sebuah band yang bernama Sweet Baby yang hampir sama dengan nama band mereka sebelumnya.
